WHAT IS SMPLAY?
===============
SMPlay is part of a package of two programs that make up what is
called THE SOUND MACHINE. SMPlay is a small version that only plays
sound files. The other program will convert sound files and uses an
Intuition interface.
The Sound Machine presently plays the following formats:
IFF - the format used on the Amiga, in 8SVX form.
RAW - RAW audio data, which most sound programs will load.
WAV - The "Wave" format, most commonly used in MicroSoft Windows.
VOC - The "Voice" format, from Creative Labs (they make the
SoundBlaster for the IBM).
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
====================
SMPlay will run on any Amiga with 512k and OS 1.2 or higher. It has
been tested with an Amiga 3000 running AmigaDOS 2.1, and an Amiga 1000
running 1.3.
This program must be run from the CLI.
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
====================
The usage for SMPlay is as follows:
SMPlay soundfile [rXXXXX] [v] [lX] [i]
The options in square brackets are optional. Note that the program
will automagically detect which type of file you are playing, so there is
no need to specify. If it can't figure it out, it will play it as if it
were RAW.
rXXXXX - This option allows you to force a specific playback rate.
For example, you could indicate 'r22000' to specify a
playback rate of 22,000 samples per second.
v - This option will VIEW information about the sample. In other
words it will dump information including the playback rate, the
format and any other pertinent information. By default, the
program is silent about such things.
lX - Loop control. If you wish to play back the sample looped several
times, use this option. For example, 'l5' would cause the
sample to play back 5 times in a row.
i - Inverse. If the sample plays back improperly, try using this
option (especially if the sample is a raw file from the MAC or
PC).
WHAT CAN BE ADDED?
==================
The following options should/could be added to the program. In
order to do this, we need to hear from people that are interested in having
these features or have suggestions of their own. Our address is listed at
the bottom of the file.
* Support for AUD and SND files. Though basically RAW files, it would be
nice to have full support for these formats for completeness.
* Support for STEREO WAV and multi-dac VOC files. It would be helpful if
we had some official documentation on WAV files (their support in this
program comes completely from file exploration)
* Support for 16-bit samples. Both loading and saving these samples in
16-bit form (including 16-bit IFF support) but also the option of
converting the samples to 8-bit for playback on standard Amiga hardware.
* Batch conversion support
* More DSP support, perhaps some special effects ... converting stereo
samples to mono, etc.
* Ability to play files larger than RAM
